OUR PROCESS
Wholly human, and we can prove it
We don’t use generative AI anywhere in our process.
Scholar & Story is a human-generated research, writing, and publishing studio. That isn’t a position we adopted when it became fashionable; rather, it’s the condition upon which the Studio was built. Every piece of research, draft, copyedit, proofread, and design is made by a named, qualified person. And we keep the records that demonstrate it.
Here’s how it works.

WHY IT MATTERS
The ground is shifting under writers.
Generative AI has moved through publishing faster than the industry can absorb it, and the response has been blunt: governments are drafting disclosure law; platforms are building detection into their systems; agents, publishers, competition juries, universities, and grant bodies are second-guessing every draft.
And we’re all asking the same question of everything we read:
Did a person actually write this?
Even a sliver of doubt can break trust and ruin a reputation.
Detection tools aren’t good at answering that question. They flag clean prose and non-native syntax with roughly equal confidence and roughly equal inaccuracy. Writers with nothing to hide are already being accused, and accusations are nearly impossible to rebuff.
We think that the standard will tighten rather than relax, meaning that—as the years pass—detection tools will get more accurate, and writers will be under even more scrutiny.
So we created a process that bakes in evidence as a by-product from the jump. If a reader or a publisher or a journalist questions the origin of your book today, tomorrow, or ten years down the road, you’ll have the receipts.
THE STANDARD
Exactly what we promise.
We use no generative AI in any part of our work with you. That includes prose, research, feedback, editing, cover art, and interior imagery.
We’re pretty uptight about it…and we’re proud of that.
The tools we do use are the ordinary non-generative ones writers have had for decades: a spellchecker, a dictionary, a search engine, a reference database, and transcriptions of our own recorded voices.
We do these really human things called thinking, crafting, and creating.
And we’re strictly against human-washing. Those who promise that they’re not using AI but can’t provide the proof might be pulling your leg.
In 2026, we rebuilt our entire backend and standard operating procedures to bake data-driven receipts of the human touch into the final product.
THE EVIDENCE
We work inside Scrivener, so the record builds itself.
All of our research, note-taking, drafting, revision, and editorial work happens inside Scrivener—a writing software built for long-form projects. We require our 1:1 coaching clients and Book Production clients to buy their own licence so that we’re all working in the same word processor, on the same project, and in the same file structure.
It’s a one-off cost of roughly £50. You pay once, and you own it forever with no subscription.
We ask for this because of what Scrivener does in the background. It holds every snapshot, every revision, every abandoned scene, every research note, and every editorial comment in one archived project, where everything gets timestamped and attributed. It’s a filing system and project management tool that also acts as a provenance record.
From it, we produce version histories that show a chapter developing from first note to final line, annotated drafts carrying our editorial comments in our own words, snapshots of the manuscript at any point in its life, and a full research trail with sources attached to the passages they support.
It’s the closest thing writing has to a laboratory notebook, and it’s the difference between saying you wrote your book and being able to show the years of thinking that produced it.
THE ARCHIVE
What we keep and what you take with you.
Alongside the Scrivener project, we keep a full record of the collaboration itself: meeting recordings and transcripts, coaching and feedback sessions, editorial correspondence, dated drafts at every stage, and design files with their working layers intact.
That archive belongs to your project, and you receive it with your final handoff package. Whether we researched and wrote the book for you, coached you through writing it yourself, or handled only the editing, proofreading, or design, you finish with documentary proof of how the work came to exist and who did which part of it.
A record is only worth what it’s worth in ten years, so we’re serious about back-up hygiene. Client work and project records live on dedicated drives kept for that purpose alone, backed up on a regular schedule and held apart from everything else we do. Nothing sits in one place, and nothing sits somewhere it can be casually overwritten.
Most writers will never need it…but we’d rather you had it and never opened it than needed it and couldn’t find it.
THE STUDIO
Real people, and you’ll know all their names.
Every client gets a place inside of our Slack studio with dedicated channels for their project. You won’t be handed to an anonymous queue or an inbox that answers in four days. You’ll work directly with your project manager, your editor, your proofreader, your coach, and your designer, and you’ll personally know each of them.
That transparency is part of the same commitment. Every person on your project is a real, qualified, experienced professional, and you can ask any of them anything at any point and get an answer from whomever did the work.
DESIGN
Drawn rather than generated.
The same rule governs our cover design, typesetting, and interior layout. We don’t use generated imagery, illustration, or typographic treatments. Covers are designed by working artists, and we keep the layered working files that show how each one was built.
This is why our design costs more than the equivalent listing on Fiverr or any freelance marketplace. What you’re quoted there is often for a generated image with a typeface laid over it, made in an afternoon by someone who can’t tell you where the image came from or what it was trained on. Ours takes longer because a person makes it, revises it, and collaborates with you on it. Our prices reflect the hours, the skill, and the guarantee that your cover won’t become a liability the year the platforms start checking.
THE TRADE
Slower…and deliberately so.
We won’t be the fastest quote you get. A studio that generates a first draft overnight will always beat us on speed, and we’ve made our peace with that.
What we offer instead is work that lasts: research done by someone who understood what they were reading, structure built by someone who knew why it needed building that way, editing done by someone who’d read the whole book and cared about it, and a finished project you can stand behind without an asterisk for the rest of your career.
It’s a trade-off, sure…but it’s one that we’re willing to make.
